$500. This is the financial benefits of exercise. As in, the average person forgoes $500 worth of medical expenditures – if they exercise.

Instead of spending $500 on health care, I would rather spend $500 on a road trip or a meditation retreat, even a fancy meal would be better bang for my buck than 500 dollars on health care.

It’s not that I don’t care about my health, I do. However, it feels like I am not holding up my end of the human body bargain, if I am shelling out this significant chunk of money on preventable diseases.

Grab your water and comfy shoes we are going for a run!

THE MAGIC PILL

I self-prescribed a magic pill. Side effects have included decreased risk of disease and increased my savings. As long as I don’t google symptoms, I am a great doctor!

Truthfully, I have great respect for doctors and the medical establishment. However, I am not interested in visiting; as a patient. I would rather spend my time and money on things that don’t involve anxiety-inducing wait times.

To prevent hemorrhaging of money for medical expenses, I do preventive maintenance aka exercise. Is it ironic that I feel healthier the less time I spend in hospitals with doctors telling me that I’m healthy?

A SHOT OF PAIN & GAIN

This self-prescribed pill has been a long, painful swallow of experience and my ego.

When I was younger and full of foolish bravado, I was content with my exercise routine. In that I didn’t exercise. Ever.

I was fortunate to have a semi-active life which included a part-time job as a lifeguard and a brief stint with tennis. But, I also had awful habits of skipping breakfast, forgoing water, and eating too much junk food. I assumed that because I was thin that also meant I was fit.

So. Many. Levels. Of. Wrong.

Then, I joined the Navy. It was kind of like going from never exercising to running a marathon today. Except with an excessive amount of yelling. Ah, the awkward memories of boot camp….

Needless to say, I learned that if I didn’t want to fail the physical fitness test, again, I needed to figure out my life.

VACCINATING AGAINST STRESS

I started with the basics; doing whatever was mandated by the physical fitness requirements. At that point, exercise felt like “unpaid work”.

As the years progressed, this “work” turned into routine. Then routine began to replace some of my stressful habits like smoking. I know! Did mention my foolish follies of youth?

Replacing my smoking stress relief to running was like a booster shot for my health and happiness. Now, when people are vomiting verbal toxicity, I grab my running shoes for trail therapy.

INCREASING THE DOSAGE

Considering how much exercise I do for my standard fitness routine and stress relief, you’d think I would be at my optimum dosage for fitness.

Yet, much of my spare time includes more exercise from hiking to juggling. Luckily, there is no such thing as overdosing on exercise. Right? Should I be googling this?

Along with the financial benefits of exercise, I am enjoying an active, exciting lifestyle.

That was the goal of my self-prescription: A life full of health, savings, and Life List excursions.
